This talk presents the optimal placement of position reconfigurable antennas, covering both continuous and discrete designs. In the continuous case, antenna density design is formulated as a functional optimization problem that characterizes the optimal allocation of aperture resources over the array. In the discrete case, antenna positions are treated by analogy with charges in electrostatic equilibrium: the optimal placement coincides with the zeros of the polynomial solution to a Heine–Stieltjes equation, which degenerates to a Heun equation in near-field LoS scenarios and further to a Jacobi equation in the far field, yielding analytical, low-complexity antenna placement designs.

This talk introduces the sectored uniform circular array (sUCA) design for near-field localization, which mitigates the edge-resolution collapse and large ranging errors of linear arrays, and presents a low-complexity localization method based on wavefront back-propagation emulation together with its performance analysis.

DPSS-based Dictionary Design for Near-Field XL-MIMO Channel Estimation

Conference Presentation, IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC), Denver, CO, USA, Jun. 2024

This talk presents a discrete prolate spheroidal sequence (DPSS)-based dictionary design for near-field XL-MIMO channel estimation. The proposed dictionary features mutually orthogonal codewords and a compact size, reducing pilot overhead while maintaining accurate channel estimation.
